Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused by diabetes mellitus where blood vessels of the retina are harmed due to high blood glucose levels. Such damage to the blood vessels of the retina can cause them to become leaky resulting in swelling of the retina (macular oedema), poor blood flow to the retina and abnormal bleeding.  Diabetic Retinopathy is more likely to develop in those patients who have uncontrolled or longstanding diabetes.

Early detection and treatment before the retina is severely damaged is the most effective way to decrease the risk of vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.  Symptoms such as blurry vision or floaters only emerge after diabetic retinopathy has developed, therefore, regular eye examinations are important.

A diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy may prompt investigations including Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans and in some cases Fluorescein Angiography. These tests are done to identify macular swelling (oedema) as well as areas of the retina which may be under perfused (ischaemic) or the development of new blood vessels (neovascularisation). From here the appropriate treatments can be applied.

There are a range of treatments available for diabetic retinopathy.  As a mainstay, it is important to try and optimise your diabetic control as well as that of other cardiovascular risk factors such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  The Ophthalmologists at Rockhampton Eye Clinic may recommend treatment of your diabetic eye disease including intravitreal therapies or the use of retinal laser.

As with all eye procedures, there are risks associated with ophthalmic procedures and these will be explained at the time of your consultation.  If you have any concerns regarding your eye after your procedure we recommend you contact the clinic to discuss your symptoms and arrange review. If you are unable to reach the clinic or one of our doctors, please attend your nearest Emergency Department for review.
