Dry Eye

Dry eye is a common disorder affecting the quality of the tear film of the eye. It is due to reduced tear production or excessive evaporation from the eye surface.

What are the symptoms?

Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Irritation/ the feeling of something in the eye
  • Blurred vision which comes and goes
  • Red eye
  • Eye fatigue

These symptoms may be worse in dry, windy conditions as well as with certain activities such as prolonged computer work or reading.

What causes dry eye?

There can be multiple contributors to dry eye.  The tear film of the eye is made of multiple layers and factors affecting any of these layers can cause dry eye.

A common contributor to dry eye is a condition called ‘blepharitis’.  Blepharitis is when the oil producing glands in the eyelids (called the meibomian glands) become blocked.  The outer layer of the tear film consists of the oil from these glands.  Without this outer oily layer the underlying liquid tears evaporate quicker and this gives rise to dry eye.

What are the treatments available?

It is important in the treatment of dry eye to address the underlying causes.  This may include treatment to help with blepharitis as well as lubricants to assist with the quality of the tear film.

The Ophthalmologists at Rockhampton Eye Clinic will discuss with you how best to address this condition factoring in your lifestyle requirements.

As with all eye procedures, there are risks associated with ophthalmic procedures and these will be explained at the time of your consultation.  If you have any concerns regarding your eye after your procedure we recommend you contact the clinic to discuss your symptoms and arrange review. If you are unable to reach the clinic or one of our doctors, please attend your nearest Emergency Department for review.
