Flashes & Floaters

The main cavity of the eye, between the lens and the retina, is occupied by the vitreous humour. This is a clear, gel like substance which helps to maintain the eye shape and transparency. Not uncommonly, people may notice ‘floaters’ in their vision. The term floaters refers to the fine line, mosquito or cob-web like images which transiently move across the vision. These are common particularly as we age. Flashes are sparks of light which are often perceived in the peripheral vision. They are due to traction on the retina from the vitreous.

Symptoms of retinal tear/ detachment

Symptoms that may suggest the development of a retinal tear or retinal detachment and require urgent assessment include:

  • The sudden onset of floaters or flashes
  •  A change or increase in floaters
  • Loss of vision
  • The impression of a curtain extending across the vision

If you experience these symptoms you should attend your nearest Optometrist or GP as soon as possible for assessment and referral for a comprehensive retinal examination.

As with all eye procedures, there are risks associated with ophthalmic procedures and these will be explained at the time of your consultation.  If you have any concerns regarding your eye after your procedure we recommend you contact the clinic to discuss your symptoms and arrange review. If you are unable to reach the clinic or one of our doctors, please attend your nearest Emergency Department for review.
