Patient Information
Referrals
We welcome all referrals from Optometrists, General Practitioners and other Specialists. Referrals will remain current for 12 months from a General Practitioner and Optometrist or 3 months from a Specialist.
Appointment Reminder
A SMS reminder will be sent automatically 5 days before your appointment if we have your mobile number on record. You are able to confirm your appointment by replying to the message.
Appointments
Consultation times may vary and can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours. Depending on the nature of your eye condition you may be required to attend a pre-consultation testing appointment which is designed to make your review with the specialist more efficient.
Your eyes may be dilated at your appointment. We therefore recommend you either arrange a driver to accompany you or allow sufficient time for the effect of the dilating drops to wear off. Please feel free to confirm this with our staff prior to your appointment date.
We recommend you bring a pair of sunglasses to your appointment as your eyes will be sensitive to sunlight if your pupils are dilated.
If you wear contact lenses, please advise our reception team at the time of your appointment booking. Contact lenses can affect our diagnostic testing and measurements. They can be worn to your appointment but if possible it is best to remove them prior to the appointment and wear glasses instead. Our staff will be able to advise you regarding contact lens wear prior to your appointment.
If you can no longer attend your appointment, please notify our reception staff at your earliest convenience. This will allow us to reschedule your appointment in a timely fashion.
If you feel your condition is deteriorating or that you need to be seen sooner than your allocated appointment, please notify your referring GP or optometrist and contact our clinic to discuss.
Please note we are a private billing practice. Fees are associated with specialist consultation as well as diagnostic testing. Please contact our reception team to discuss further.
Parking
Free parking is available on-site at the Mater Hospital.
Cancellation Policy
We understand circumstances may change. If you can no longer attend or choose not to attend your appointment please notify our reception staff at your earliest convenience. This will allow for prompt and best suited rescheduling of your appointment and allow someone else your appointment time as a wait list for appointments is often in place.
Diagnostic Testing
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina which is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye.
A fluorescein angiography is a medical procedure in which a fluorescent dye is injected into the bloodstream. The dye highlights the blood vessels in the back of the eye so they can be photographed. This test is often used to manage eye disorders.
Fundus photography involves capturing a photograph of the back of the eye i.e. fundus.
A-scan ultrasound biometry, commonly referred to as an A-scan, an essential diagnostic test used in ophthalmology. The A-scan provides data on the length of the eye, which is a major determinant in common sight disorders. This test is necessary for cataract surgery.
B-scan ultrasonography, or B-scan, is a diagnostic test used in ophthalmology to produce a two-dimensional, cross-sectional view of the eye and the orbit.
A pachymeter is a medical device used to measure the thickness of the eye's cornea.
Corneal topography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye.
Visual field tests are used to detect blind spots, which could be a sign of eye diseases. The size and shape of a blind spot offers important information about the presence and severity of diseases of the eye, optic nerve and visual structures in the brain.
This is general information. Specific information regarding your eye care will be discussed at the time of your consultation. If you have any concerns regarding your eye after your procedure we recommend you contact the clinic to discuss your symptoms and arrange review. If you are unable to reach the clinic or one of our doctors, please attend your nearest Emergency Department for review.
